Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today by Kathi Macias

A few weeks ago I was introduced to the writings of Kathi Macias. Having never read any of her books before, I had no idea what to expect. What I found was precious.

Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today moves through the stories of fifteen women of Scripture and their children, bringing to light how their experiences are not so different from our own. Interspersed throughout each story the reader finds numerous quotes from various authors and prominent historical figures adding a depth - and an occasional chuckle - to the experience.

After each chapter the reader is encouraged to journal in response to several questions related to the chapter. These questions are the heart and meat of the book. Without these questions Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today is just another sweet book for moms. With these questions, the book is a growing tool, truly diving into how we can grow from studying the narratives of God's Word and applying their truths to our lives. The questions are followed up with a prayer, further applying the truths learned.

From a practical standpoint, two features stood out in this book. First of all, it is written with short chapters and many subdivisions, making it easy for mothers to read it in short spurts while still being solidly challenged by the content. Secondly, Kathi Macias manages to greatly dive into the lives of these women without taking the liberties often taken by authors who write extensively about biblical characters. Whether or not the reader agrees with her perspective, it cannot be said that the author is ever out of line with Scripture.

From a personal standpoint, this book was thought provoking, challenging, and encouraging. The discussion of the Canaanite woman from Matthew 15:21-28 and Mark 7:24-30 (found in chapter 11) touched me more than any other chapter as the author brought to life the depths of a faithful mother driven to persistent prayer for her child. Chapter 14's discussion of the Proverbs 31 woman brought encouragement as no discussion of this ideal woman ever has.

I was captivated by this book and drawn in. I wanted to find opportunities to read more. And, I was a bit sad to close it for the last time. This is definitely a book I will read again and recommend to others.
