Finishing a thought
Well, I think God has brought me around to a new realization on the verse I mentioned Thursday - Psalm 127:2. While Doug was at work on Thursday, he had an opportunity he hadn't had in a while to be the "unofficial chaplain," as he says. It actually made the day meaningful and made him feel like he'd done something worth doing! The situation gave credence and solidarity to the thoughts that had been swirling in my head all day about the verse I'd read. We don't go to work to make money! Do we need money to survive? Yes, without a doubt. We are in a money-driven society, and things are expensive! But, the verse says that God "gives to His beloved even in his sleep." So, getting the money is not the issue. Does that mean that since work is vain and we don't need it to make money that we can just sit at home and do nothing? Ha! I don't think I'd even wish for that! But, it does mean that our jobs are for something other than that paycheck. There is a reason Doug is still in his current job instead of teaching or pastoring full-time. There is a reason I'm still working at Mother's Day Out instead of being released to homeschool full-time. Neither one has to do with meeting our family's financial needs. That's God's job. Both have to do with accomplishing the work God has for us to do while we're there, and when we're done He'll release us to move on to our next task. If our attitude is that we're going to work to make money, we'll always be discouraged about it. Hmm...seems to go along with another verse I recall - Col. 3:23, which reads, "Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men."

I had just been thinking about this recently (I have to remind myself of it constantly) - money, what we need for our physical sustenance, always comes from on high. Who are we to think that the "job" actually gives us the money? G-D gives us ability, He allows the opportunity to work, He supplies the company with the funds to hire us....so, essentially, we don't get paid from our jobs, we get sustained by the L-RD. He could choose to take away our ability, our opportunity or the "money-tree," and from there, He still provides for those He loves - in His way. It helps me to be focused on ministry at all time ("as unto the L-RD") when I remember these things.
